"Clean, comfortable rooms at the lowest price of any national chain."
Founded in 1962 in Santa Barbara, California, Motel 6 is synonymous with a great travel value. The first Motel 6 in Santa Barbara still leaves the light on today, but a lot has changed for the motel chain that pioneered the first real economy motel designed for the no-frills traveler. The original price of a night's stay at Motel 6 was just $6.00, and thus established the brand name for an American classic.
The promise of the lowest price of any national chain and a clean, comfortable room are Motel 6 virtues. Motel 6 is a household name, synonymous with quality and value. It enjoys the highest brand recognition factor of any economy lodging brand.
The brand continues to grow and currently has approximately 1,200 locations with more than 105,000 rooms in the United States and Canada. Part of G6 Hospitality, Motel 6 is the largest owned and operated hotel chain in North America.

The brand's advertising campaign, featuring on-air personality Tom Bodett, began in 1986 and proved an instant success for Motel 6, turning the chain into a household name and winning industry awards. The campaign has won more advertising awards than any other brand in the lodging industry, which is understandable, given that Motel 6 has the highest advertising recognition factor in the economy lodging category. Ask most people about Motel 6, and they will say, "That's the place where they leave the light on for you." In 1999, Motel 6 was acknowledged by Advertising Age magazine as having one of the top 100 advertising campaigns in the last 100 years. Motel 6 was the only lodging company to earn this distinction.

Motel 6/Studio 6
One day David Fowler, a creative director from The Richards Group advertising agency, was driving down the Dallas Parkway in his pickup truck listening to the public radio station his receiver had been stuck on for months. Suddenly a homey voiced monologue emerged from his dusty dashboard. He heard the name, Tom Bodett, and thought, "Gosh, if I only had an account for a national budget motel brand with a sense of humor and humility, I could make a heck of an advertising campaign with this guy." Enter Motel 6, and the rest, as they say, is history. More than twenty years of award winning advertising later, Tom is still speaking out of America's dusty dashboards and television screens about life as a road warrior, and the merits of Motel 6.
After nearly 25 years in Alaska, these days Tom lives with his wife and sons in Vermont. He writes in the barn over his woodshop, looks for things to do with a tractor and keeps a small studio.
In addition to bragging about Motel 6, Tom’s voice has appeared on Steven Spielberg's "Animaniacs" series for Warner Brothers Animation, Saturday Night Live, and the PBS series “Travels on America’s Historic Trails”, and he is a regular panelist on NPR’s satirical weekend news quiz “Wait-Wait…Don’t Tell Me”.
Tom has published seven books to date." As Far As You Can Go Without a Passport" and "Small" Comforts are collections of his commentary for National Public Radio published by Addison Wesley in Boston. "The End of the Road" and "The Big Garage on Clear Shot" published by William Morrow & Co. are the collected humorous monologues from his award-winning radio series "The End of the Road" which aired on over 160 stations from 1988-1990. Hyperion published “The Free Fall of Webster Cummings,” Tom’s first novel, in April of 1996. Tom has also written two novels for young readers, “Williwaw!” and “Norman Tuttle on the Last Frontier”, Knopf published both.
Tom has recorded all of his published works and are available from Bantam Audio, Brilliance Corporation, or Random House/Listening Library.
For more information about Tom's published works and to look in on his blog, visit the official Tom Bodett web site at www.bodett.com.
